113th U.S. Open at Merion Recapped- Where We Were Right + Where We Were Oh So Wrong #Merion

It was a whirlwind week of brutality, deep rough, tough scoring and yet some fantastic entertainment at Merion.  Here’s where we were right and also where we were so wrong on our 113th U.S. Open predictions:

Where I was right:

– I spot on nailed Phil Mickelson finishing 2nd place this week immediatley after he was leading on Thursday.  Sorry folks, Phil is never going to win the U.S. Open.  #6RunnerUps

– Even with no previous top 10’s in U.S. Opens, I tabbed Luke Donald as a top contender for the week on my ESPN 99.1 FM radio interview on Tuesday of U.S. Open week.  Luke was right in the mix all week until a brutal stretch on the front 9 on Sunday doomed his chances, ultimately setting him back to a t-8th.

– I had eventual winner Justin Rose as one of my five LOCKZILLA picks for the week.  Dang, that 25/1 would’ve been nice.

– Despite Jason Dufner not posting a top-10 all year, I loved him on this classic track where Hogan is a past champ.  If it weren’t for a triple bogey on the 15th, we may very well have been watching a 2-Man playoff today between Rose and Duf.  Nevertheless, it was a t-4th finish and overall a very solid week for the Duf man.

– Straight up nailed my two HOSEL-ROCKET BUST picks of the week– Bubba Watson + Keegan Bradley.  Keegan and his muscular flat-billed hat missed the cut by a mile and Bubba finished t-32nd and was never a factor.  Gotta learn to dial it down and hit fairways boys…

– I went against the grain of what so many “experts” were saying this week (the 62s and double digit under par winning score were hilariously wrong) and said that Merion would play tough and would show its gnarly teeth (although it definitely played even tougher than I thought it would).

– In the looniest of predictions, there was indeed a hole-in-one this week, even though Shawn Stefani gave it to us in the most unconventional of ways.

Where I was definitely wrong:

– So I did go against the grain and say Merion would play tough, but I had 7-under as the winning score, and it was 1-over that took home the trophy on a 6,996 yard golf course.  Golf course architects everywhere, take note!

I had Luke Donald at 33/1 and Jason Dufner at 50/1 as my two favorite betting odds picks for the week.  While both gave it a good run and had a chance on Sunday, almost doesn’t count when it comes to sports betting.

I had Kyle Stanley as a LOCKZILLA pick this week.  While he made the cut, he shot rounds of 85-78 over the weekend to finish 73rd (DFL of all those who made the cut).  Ouch.

– Also, my Driver-off-the-Deck BOLD play of the week, Kevin Chappell, didn’t turn out so well either, as he finished t-32nd.

All in all, a great week for Mike Davis, the USGA, the PGA Tour, Merion and traditional golf course fans everywhere.  Seems like everyone other than Zach Johnson had a good week.

Congrats to Justin Rose on a lifelong dream achieved.
