2013 Greenbrier Classic Preview, Picks + Predictions Plus the Driver-Off-The-Deck BOLD Play of the Week

Things that come to mind when thinking of the Greenbrier:

–        Stuart Appleby (bizarro world name = Apple Stuartby) and his 59

–        A wicked awesome clubhouse and something about the Cold War

–        The coolest name of any TPC course (Old White TPC)

–        Also possibly the coolest city name where a PGA Tour event is held- White Sulphur Springs, WV

–        A tournament director who pays players under the table to play his tournament…oh wait, did I just say that out loud? #coughcoughTigerWoods

–        Rookies feasting their way to wins(Ted Potter Jr., Scott Stallings winning the past two years)

–        18th hole being a par 3 (nope it’s not an executive course)

–        A rocking fireworks show that I need to attend some day.

–        Phil Mickelson talking about how great everything is there but only really playing because of the appearance fee…wait I just said that out loud again, didn’t I.

–        #birdieplethora

Lastly, wish I wasn’t always out of town on July 4th weekend so I could actually watch the tourney.  Guessing I’m not alone there…

Now, onto some picks:

LOCKZILLAS: (Last week: Day t-21st, Mahan MC)

Graham DeLaet
Graham DeLaet
– Going to keep riding his Canadian tail until he inevitably breaks through into the winner’s circle.  Finished a solid t-8th last week at Congressional for his second straight top 10 and his fifth of the season.  Finished t-12th here last year and leads the PGA Tour in GIR = yep, major lockzilla pick this week.

Webb Simpson
Webb Simpson
– Dowd’s husband finished t-5th at the Travelers two weeks ago and has two top 10s here at Greenbrier in his past two appearances.  A must start in any Fantasy lineup this week.

SEMI-FLIERS: (Last week: DeLaet t-8th, Laird t-54th)

Scott Stallings
Scott Stallings
– Stallings majorly let me down last week as my Driver-off-the-Deck BOLD play of the week, but the 2011 champ has some seriously good vibes here and when it comes to making hot, sweaty birdies in the summer, Stallings is perfectly cut from that cloth.

Jordan Spieth
Jordan Spieth
– Spieth has gone from amateur, to trying-maximize-his-seven-sponsors-exemptions to playing so well he’s now eligible for unlimited sponsor’s exemptions to damn, he might play his way into the FedEx Cup this fall.  The kid has unlimited talent and comes off a solo 6th at Congressional last week.

*Also keep an eye on Jason Kokrak and Brendon de Jonge this week

HOSEL-ROCKET BUSTS: (Last week: Watney t-61st, Colsaerts t-21st)

Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson
– 0 for 2 here in cuts made in his career, just showing up for the appearance fee (under the table style).  Phil and his U.S. Open letdown hair won’t sniff contention this week.

Bubba Watson
Bubba Watson
– Bubba’s first appearance at Greenbrier won’t be a memorably good one, the bad karma from his spaz-out moment on his caddie two weeks ago at the Travelers Championship is going to bite him in the arse this week.

DRIVER-OFF-THE-DECK BOLD PLAY OF THE WEEK: (Last week: Stallings MC)

Roberto Castro
Roberto Castro
– The American with the seemingly bizarre name (his parents are both Hispanic) might be the best Thursday golfer on Tour this year (and may have triggered the best tweet of the year thus far at the PLAYERS Championship).  Here’s to betting Roberto can put together four solid rounds and find his way into contention this year (shot 63 in the final round last year to finish t-7th).  Senor Castro is your Driver-off-the-Deck BOLD play of the week.
