2016 Hyundai TOC Picks, Including the Driver-Off-The-Deck BOLD Play of the Week #isitThursdayyet

Yeah baby, the week we’ve all been waiting for is finally here- it’s the start of the 2016 PGA Tour season!  Wait a tic, you mean the season started already back in October and they’ve already played 7 official events this season?  Like those guys that won get to count it as official prize money, get an Augusta invite and everything? Ok so yeah, even a few years into this wraparound schedule thingamajig it still takes a little getting used to, but hey, all that matters is that we’re about to be gazing at some live PGA Tour golf prime time style in January.  What’s not to like about that?

This week is the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, which is the winner’s only event from the prior year.  So yeah—Tiger, Phil, Rickie and Jordan— oh wait, I mean not those first two, just Rickie, Jordan, DJ, Bubba, Jason Day and other studlies are pegging it this week.

The host venue as always is The Plantation Course at Kapaula Resort, which is Hawaiian for enormous fairways and beautiful vistas.  Ok, I made that up, but seriously, this course has some of the widest fairways on Tour and some incredible views of the surrounding Pacific Ocean.  Also of note is that it’s the only par 73 on Tour, which rings in at 7,452 yards from the tips.  Oh yeah, and did I mention the prime time factor with the Hawaii time change?  #cantwait

Now, let’s hop into some picks:

LOCKZILLA

Dustin Johnson
Dustin Johnson
– I predicted big things for DJ at the start of last season and through 71 holes at the U.S. Open he seemed ready to hoist his first major championship trophy.  Obviously his three-wiggle on the 72nd green prevented that from happening, but it still was another solid year for the 31-year-old long-bombing goose with a victory at the WGC-Cadillac and a flurry of other top 10 finishes.  His interest and putter seem to wander adrift at times, but I feel a big start to the year coming for the 2013 Hyundai TOC champ.

SEMI-FLIER

Kevin Kisner
Kevin Kisner
– Twas great to see the Kis finally break through and get his first PGA Tour victory in the fall’s final event at the RSM Classic and I see that strong momentum continuing heading into 2016.  Look for Kis to notch another top 5 to further pad his quickly expanding bank account.

HOSEL-ROCKET BUST

Padraig Harrington
Padraig Harrington
– With apologies to my fellow Harrington, stay away from Paddy this week.  One would think that he’d have course history here, but it’s actually his first start.  Oh yeah, and since his March victory at the Honda Classic, other than his t-20th at the British Open his best was a t-42nd at the PLAYER Championship back in May.  Yowza.  Steer clear this week and sadly, probably all season from Paddy.

DRIVER-OFF-THE-DECK BOLD PLAY OF THE WEEK

Danny Lee
Danny Lee
– The former U.S. Amateur champ finally tapped into his large potential last season by winning The Greenbrier Classic and 7 other top 10s.  No reason to believe that momentum is going to cease anytime soon, as at just 25-years-old he’s just barely beginning to embark on his PGA Tour career.  Just a hunch that he makes his first Hyundai TOC appearance really count.
