2018 Fort Worth Invitational Picks, Including the Driver-Off-The-Deck BOLD Play of the Week #isitThursdayyet

The tournament that seems to change names annually is back!  Now labeled the Fort Worth Invitational, this tourney seems to have an identity crisis of sorts nearly once per year…except no it doesn’t, as its host course has remained rock solid as Colonial Country Club since it debuted as the Colonial Invitational way back in 1946.

Colonial CC is a par 70, tree-lined, dogleg happy 7,204 yard track that demands accuracy off the tee and is a ball-striker’s delight.  It stands as no surprise then that ball-strikin’ wizards such as Boo Weekley, David Toms and Steve Stricker have all won here in the past decade, and turning just a few more pages back into the history books you’ll see all-time greats like Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Ben Crenshaw, Arnold Palmer and of course Ben Hogan with their names on the trophy.  Yep, no doubt about it- that ugly tartan jacket has some mighty fine company up its sleeves.

My picks last week at the AT&T Byron Nelson were a mixed bag, as my Semi-Flier Marc Leishman and his birdie and eagle plethora came up just short of Aaron Wise’s breakthrough win as he finished 2nd.  I also spot on nailed Sergio Garcia to miss the cut as my Hosel-Rocket BUST of the week.  But, I was off the mark with Matt Kuchar as my Lockzilla and Ryan Palmer as my Driver-off-the-Deck BOLD play of the week as they both missed the cut.

Now, let’s hop into some picks for this week:

LOCKZILLA (Last week: Kuchar MC)

Matt Kuchar
Matt Kuchar
– Yep, I’m going straight back to the well with Kuch again this week after he let me down in this spot last week at the AT&T Byron Nelson.  Last week was a brand new, somewhat bizarrely unique course for nearly everyone in the field and I’m willing to write off that missed cut performance completely.  Prior to that, Kuch was in solid form having made every cut for the season and coming in on the heels of a t-17th at the PLAYERS Championship.  Kuch also loves him some Colonial, with 5 top 20s on his resume, including t-12th last year and t-6th in ’16.

SEMI-FLIER (Last week: Leishman 2nd)

Jason Kokrak
Jason Kokrak
– A true flier here to be sure (could probably remove the “Semi” part on this one), as Kokrak’s form has been all over the map so far this season.  Why the risk?  Well, even though he is a bomber off the tee, he actually is quite good on “less than driver” courses as he can nuke daddy that 2-iron out there 260+ with the best of ’em, which is perfect for dogleggy Colonial.  His past results at other “less than driver” courses like the Valspar and RBC Heritage (last year) prove that.  A big risk to be sure, but I’ve got a good feeling about the 32-year-old this week.

HOSEL-ROCKET BUST (Last week: Sergio MC)

Aaron Wise
Aaron Wise– An incredible win for the youngster last week at the Byron Nelson!  But yeah, I’m in full fade mode on the 21-year-old this week, as backing up that first Tour win is not an easy thing to do. #sorrynotsorry

DRIVER-OFF-THE-DECK BOLD PLAY OF THE WEEK (Last week: Palmer MC)

Bill Haas
Bill Haas
– The 35-year-old Tour veteran has been scuffling of late, coming in on the heels of 3 straight missed cuts.  Well, the best anecdote to cure that poor play is a comfortable, familiar venue, which Colonial certainly qualifies as in Haas’ book.  Haas is a stud on “less-than-driver” courses, which dogleg-happy Colonial certainly qualifies as.  Haas is a perfect 6/6 cuts made in his last six appearances here, including a t-8th in ’11 and a t-12th last year.  He’s also not too far removed from good form as he finished t-7th at Harbour Town just last month.  Bill Haas is your Driver-off-the-Deck BOLD play of the week!
