Phil Mickelson Nearly Holes Approach Shot on 18th Sunday at FedEx St Jude Classic

Is there anyone in golf who gives us better expressions and reactions than Phil Mickelson?  The man who is arguably the most honest behind the mic on Tour also just might be the most honest and telling with his facial expressions on the course.

Case in point was Phil’s second shot on the 18th hole on Sunday at the FedEx St Jude Classic in Memphis.  Coming into the hole at -9 for the tourney, Phil knew that he’d need to make birdie to have any chance to win or force a playoff- he nearly did one better.

Standing in the fairway 169 yards from the pin, Phil took dead aim at the pin and came within inches of holing out for eagle, as the ball landed just short and ended up just a foot right of the cup (see video of the shot below).  What followed was a patented Phil reaction where he threw his hands up over his head with the you-gotta-be-kidding-me look we’ve all now seen countless times.

The birdie got Phil to -10 and while it wasn’t enough to win, it still gave him a momentum building t-2nd place finish heading into next week’s U.S. Open at Merion.
