Russell Knox Fires a 59, The Tour Is Just Handing Out Free Birdies and Eagles This Year #WasThisGuyPlayingGoldenTee

In this week’s edition of #WasThisGuyPlayingGoldenTee, Russell Knox takes the cake with the second 59 on the Tour in just three weeks.  Let’s take a quick step back to remind ourselves what an absurd birdiefest it’s been so far this summer.

First we had a 16-year-old kid shooting a 59 at Pinehurst.  Ok, so it’s not the same Pinehurst #2 track that the pro’s play, but still, it’s absurdly awesome, particularly for a 16-year-old.

Then, Will Wilcox fired a 59 on the Tour, in a week where if you weren’t shooting 65 or under you were getting completely dusted (there was also a 60 that week)…and he didn’t even win the tourney (finished t-3rd).

Oh yeah, and it wasn’t in an actual tournament, but some random mini-tour dude shot 12 in playing 18 holes, well seemingly anyway.  Ok, he actually shot 56 on a par 72 golf course (with a penalty stroke!).  That’s right, 18 holes, 16 under par, including FOURTEEN birdies.  Excuse me while I go undo any fist pumps for par that I’ve done so far this year.

And now?  Yep, another sub-60 score.  This time it was Russell Knox firing a 12-under 59 during the second round of the Tour’s Albertson’s Boise Open presented by Kraft.  He started on the back nine and after a birdie, par, par, par, par start, he assaulted the next 11 holes to the tune of 11-under par, which included seven birdies and two eagles.  Two pars in from there and boom, the magic number was his.

The 59 was just the fifth ever on the Tour and has him perched atop the leaderboard in Boise at the halfway point.  So Russell, here’s an official welcome to the #WasThisGuyPlayingGoldenTee club.
