Wyndham Championship Picks + Predictions Plus the Driver-Off-The-Deck BOLD Play of the Week

So, following a ball-striking stripe show performance by Jason Dufner (in which he grabbed his wife’s ass on camera during their celebratory hug, while he had her hold his dip tin), the Tour heads to the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, NC for the final regular season event of the year.

Sedgefield CC is the host for the tourney this week and for many of the players in the field of 156, it’s do-or-die as it’s the last chance to lock up a spot in the top 125 in FedEx Cup Points, which is the number that qualifies for next week’s Barcylays Championship.  Let it be noted that those that don’t finish in the top 125 in FedEx Cup Points, but that do finish in the top 125 on the season money list will lock up their fully exempt status for the ’13-’14 season.  Get it?  Got it?  Good.

Sedgefield is a par 70 and has consistently been one of top-two birdie bloodbaths as far as par 70s go on Tour.  Last year’s 69.37 scoring average was the highest it’s been since ’08, although that may have been expected due to the club’s conversion from old Bentgrass greens to new Champion Bermuda surfaces just a couple months prior.  But overall, Sedgefield’s greens are typically soft and receptive, and should be even more so with cool conditions and some rain in the forecast this week.  Expect high dosages of red numbers to be flying all week long Greensboro style this week.

Now, onto some picks (btw, last week was rock freakin’ solid pick style– Dufner, Furyk + Phil as a bust = boom baby):

LOCKZILLAS: (Last week: Dufner 1st, Zach t-8th, Stricker t-12th, Keegan t-19th, Tiger t-40th)

Zach Johnson
Zach Johnson
– Hasn’t played here since ’08 but I don’t care, as Zach’s last four events have gone something like this- t-2nd at the John Deere Classic (lost in a playoff), t-6th at the British Open (was 1st round leader), t-4th at Firestone and t-8th last week at the PGA Championship.  Pretty salty I must say.  When the 37-year-old Iowegian gets hot, he gets red hot, so no sense in bucking the heater now.  Zach is a must pick this week.

Bill Haas
Bill Haas
– A slight letdown to a t-25th last week at the PGA Championship, but coming in Haas was one of the hottest on Tour with three top 10s in his prior 4 events, including a win at the AT&T National at Congressional.  Finished t-7th here last year and will definitely have some popular vibes this week in Greensboro being a native NC boy.

Note- Also keep an eye on David Toms this week.

SEMI-FLIERS: (Last week: Haas t-25th, Furyk 2nd)

Chez Reavie
Chez Reavie
– A bit of a reach here, but for one reason or another, Chez seems to play well in less spotlight-y type events, if you know what I mean (not trying to knock him, the dude has immense talent).  Made his last 9 cuts and finished t-9th here two years ago.  Just have a hunch he’ll be well up on the leaderboard this week.

Tim Clark
Tim Clark
– Lots of Jekyl and Hyde with this shorty-porty South African’s game, but I’m willing to take a chance on him this week as he was solo 2nd and t-6th in his past two appearances here. #HorseForTheCourse

HOSEL-ROCKET BUST: (Last week: Phil t-72nd, Graeme t-12th)

Brandt Snedeker
Brandt Snedeker
– After winning the RBC Canadian Open, Sneds went t-33rd at Firestone and t-66th at the PGA Championship.  His fuel tank has to be running a little dry after so many straight weeks of golf and no doubt the Wyndham is stuck right in the middle of a Firestone/PGA letdown right before his FedEx Cup title defense.  Total letdown coming this week.

DRIVER-OFF-THE-DECK BOLD PLAY OF THE WEEK: (Last week: Sterne MC)

Roberto Castro
Roberto Castro
– This American redhead with the Spanish name finished a sneaky good t-12th last week at the PGA Championship and has been oh so close to breaking through with his first victory this year.  Solo 2nd at the AT&T National at Congressional, t-6th at the RBC Canadian Open and t-12t at the PGA in 3 of his last 5 events.  Roberto is your DOTD play of the week!
